Happy New Year 2071

Yesterday, on 31st March 2014, begun the year 2071 of Vikram Samvat (विक्रम संवत) which is the calendar followed by India officially. The day is called Chaitra Shukla Pratipda (चैत्र शुक्ल प्रतिपदा) and is celebrated throughout India especially among Hindus. The calendar is based on movement of moon and is widely followed by priests and astrologers in India.

Samvat or more properly, Samvatsar (संवत्सर) literally means ‘year’. The Vikram Samvat was started after the legendary Maharaj Vikramaditya, king of Ujjain.
